One Step are working with a leading manufacturer of specialist instrumentation supplied into the aerospace and defence environment. A new role has been created for a Process Development Engineer. Ideally Degree in Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineering or a relevant field is desirable and ideally a chartered member of an engineering / technical institution

Role

You will be working in the Engineering management team to develop the manufacturing capability within the Precision Optics & Systems Manufacturing Centre. Primarily focussed on developing new process capabilities in line with the technology roadmap that are scalable to an efficient manufacturing system. Sharing good practice with manufacturing engineers, team leaders and shop floor technicians.

Responsibilities

Maintain a regular presence on the shop floor, observing manufacturing operations and performance.
Identify, raise and manage development projects in line with the technology roadmap milestones and business strategic plan.
Working closely with Manufacturing Engineering, recommending suitable capital investments & improvements projects as well as communicating the purpose and progress of development activities.
Working with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to productionise newly developed / optimised processes and capabilities.
Include inputs from other engineering disciplines to ensure that ongoing quality problems are not perpetuated with new processes.
Good communication with shop floor operatives as well as engineers and management.
Provide mentoring to team leaders and operators to implement good practice and challenging the norm.
Optimisation of the manufacturing process chain.
Creating documentation and engineering reports to capture the results of development work.
Management of development projects to meet agreed deadlines.

Personal Attributes

Ideally with 10 years+ experience and detailed knowledge of optical fabrication and assembly.
Knowledge of the design process and optical tolerancing / error budgeting.
Experience with problem solving techniques.
Design of experiments.
Knowledge and experience of NPI techniques e.g. APQP.
Flexible approach to working to meet project deadlines
Proven capability to learn and implement new skills and processes.
Attention to detail and understanding of the business environment Skills / Abilities  Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams.
Process / value stream mapping.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and basic CAD.
Awareness of glass machining and polishing, thin film coating, machining of metals, painting, powder coating, plating and conversion coating, latest manufacturing philosophies, preferred not required.
Strong organisational skills to plan projects and achieve milestones.
Experience of lean principles.
